The term "grog" itself comes from the nickname of Admiral Edward Vernon, who was known as "Old Grog" due to the grogram cloak he often wore. In 1740, Admiral Vernon ordered that the daily rum ration of sailors be diluted with water to discourage excessive drinking. The addition of water to the rum was referred to as "grog" and eventually became a widely accepted practice.
Over time, variations of hot grog emerged, each adding its own unique twist to the recipe. Some versions included additional spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, while others incorporated honey or brown sugar for sweetness.
